One positive from the pandemic is stores ended up needing more pickers for their grocery-pick-up and delivery services, so all those no-longer-needed cashiers didn’t really get fired, just moved to a different job.
It’s probably less stressful too, less dealing with the public than as a cashier.
As someone who was working in a grocery store long before the pandemic when they got rid of the bagging position and forced to be a cashier, I would have rather stayed a bagger (or at least moved to stock). Even when I cleaned or did deliveries it was better than being a cashier.
