#767 – Totally

I never liked the taste of coffee so I don’t drink it. I think a lot of people nowadays that consider themselves coffee drinkers can’t stand the taste of coffee either.

Ha! Very true. To be fair, I don’t like anything from a large unnamed ‘coffee’ franchise either, since it’s waaaaaay too sweet for me. Just give me a rootbeer and don’t call it a coffee drink.

This is a true thing you are saying. I love the smell of coffee, but find the flavor unpleasant. But, as an additive to a flavoured steamed milk beverage, it’s quite nice.

Mind you, Ted has a good eye to do that analysis at a glance, or did they order together?

Most people buy stuff like Folgers or Maxwell house, which are garbage, and brew their coffee in an automatic dripper or Keurig, with don’t make good coffee. High quality Arabica blends taste better, but brewing it in a quality device like a Chemex, Aeropress, French Press or small Moka pot generally results in less bitter, more flavorful coffee.

Yeah, right. In my youth I learned from my Ma how to make straight coffee the old-fashioned way: boiled over a open fire to within an inch of it’s life. If it’s good enough for my Comanche elders, it should be good enough for anybody.

“Yeah, it’s basically liquid donuts. So what, you don’t like donuts now? Weirdo…”

It is coffee, it’s tasty tasty, creamy, sweet, coff…. ok it’s basically a cup of sugar… BUT I’M NOT MYSELF UNTIL I’VE HAD MY FIRST CUP OF SUGAR!! (was that too loud? “I’m a real monster until I’ve had my first cup of coffee”)

I used to think that about beer, that people only tolerate the taste for the other benefits. Turns out, you’d be surprised at how many people genuinely enjoy the taste of terrible tasting drinks.

Not all beers are created equal. I don’t like the common cheap stuff that most people drink (Coors Light, Canadian, Blue, etc…) But I do like the more expensive stuff (like Rickard’s. Tastes entirely different from Canadian, but made by the same company. Also about twice the price.) And of course, nothing beats a good micro-brewery.

As a German, I think I’m expected to have a very strong opinion on beer. I haven’t though, and I prefer wine, usually. But there are several beers that are really a dream.

You don’t seem to be familiar with the concept of an “acquired taste.” I didn’t like coffee or beer at all until about 4 years ago, and now they are two of my favorite things. At first I would only drink shitty beers and sugary bullshit coffee drinks, but now I drink microbrews so dark that no light will pass through them, and I drink my coffee black every day. Because I kept trying them over and over again and acquired a taste for them.

The only time I drink a Starbucks is about twice a year for their Pumpkin Spice Cappuccino. I don’t like coffee, but that is the only exception.

Ironically, I’ve just started experimenting with pu-erh teas. You know it’s going to be a wild cup when the recommended steeping time is 10 minutes.

Bold opinion: people don’t actually like the taste of anything that isn’t bacon

    1. tirsden says:

      I’m allergic to bacon. 🙁
