Many years ago, my dad was having heart surgery. My brother and his wife came down from Kansas, and we went to the hospital. While in the waiting area, a surgeon came out to talk with another family. He explained that they not only had to replace the ball joint in grandpa’s artificial hip, they needed to redo the legbone part, which meant they had to go up one size on the cylindrical part that fit into the bone. So he had the old ball joint in a jar, and showed it to them. Then he asked if they wanted to keep the hunk of metal. They said no, and he left. My brother looked at me, and said “One of us should have asked for it.” I was thinking the same thing.
