Chapter: Comic
When I was a kid I enjoyed watching a show called Spectreman. Each episode involves some space gorillas causing mayhem to take control of the planet. Spectreman then shows up to save the day. The plot was basically an excuse for a fight scene between Spectreman and and someone in a giant rubber monster costume. It was an amazing mixture of bad kung fu movies and Godzilla. I think the best part of the show was the theme song. It’s been around 30 years since I’ve watched it but that song is still playing in my head.

I’m such a big Godzilla fan so I rather like this comic. (Seriously…my head comes above most buildings…alright…I’m being facetious. I’m much taller.)
And now the theme to Mighty Mouse is once again playing in my head.
Spectreman is probably available in Japan. It sounds like a tokusatsu (special photography) show.
Tokusatsu is the genre of live action sci-fi show like Godzilla, Ultraman and what ultimately became Power Rangers.
Yeah, maybe the link wasn’t clear above. It was definitely from Japan. The show took place in Tokyo.

You’ve just made my day, possibly my decade. I’ve been trying to remeber that show for years! I once asked my dad to find me the show on video when I was sick in Jr. High (I graduated in ’93), and I could only describe it to him, he ended up getting the original Metropolis instead.
It was a good watch on a day I had to be inside, but ever since I’ve been trying to remember what that show was when I was a kid… Thanks!
P.S. Weren’t there other characters in that show that had the same powers as Spectreman?
Awesome! I mostly remember monsters but I’m sure there are lots of details lost to time. (now I’ll go listen to the song again.)
Well, now I’ve got some research to do, thanks for this. Another mystery from my childhood solved.
Reminds me of my childhood watching Ultraman. We lived way up north in the boonies and cable didn’t exist, just local t.v, so none of those awesome american cartoons for me. Recently I found the box set of the complete series. My children didn’t share my fond memories of that show.
City-sized monsters come and go but GODZILLA was the first Kaiju!
I love these!
