#565 – Shrooms

I know a bunch of people that have a strong aversion to mushrooms. I started eating them when I was little because my mom would put them on her salads. The first time I saw wild mushrooms I was amazed! Look! Right here on the ground! I had only seen them in grocery stores before and never really questioned where they came from.

When I was little (somewhere around 4), my friends in daycare didn’t believe me when I said I liked mushrooms on my pizza…so to prove them wrong, I ate the ones behind the shed in the play-yard. This was also my first experience with ipecac. Miss Beth, the daycare provider and friend of the family, still talks about that to this day (about 22 years later…)

This is why you have one of those pocket guides to wild mushrooms. Or only do your picking in the Mushroom Kingdom, where the poison one have skulls on them.

Asian immigrants come over here and pick a wild mushroom they think is a straw mushroom. We call it death cap. It’s one of the 5 deadliest mushrooms on the planet.

I’ve seen people pick a mushroom and with an authoritative reference in hand that has a very good picture call what they picked a morel sponge. It was destroying angel.

They say false morel is toxic but I’ve eaten it with no ill effect. I think rocket fuel agrees with me.
