#540 – Different

In grade school we had a special day of classes where we learned about puberty and forthcoming changes to our bodies. We were split up into boys and girls and sent into separate rooms to see the presentations and ask questions. I seem to recall it was all stuff I had learned through other sources at that point except wait… what are they showing the girls? What are these secrets they are keeping from us?!

I remember when my sisters got to see “That Film” at school, because as soon as Ma and Pop signed that permission slip, they bragged about it, and tried to hold the idea about what they learned over my head, because it was such a big deal and some sort of secret. At the time, it probably had to do with unicorns and Shaun Cassidy, for all I knew. I had already read through that set of red books that the parents had bought to help teach the girls about puberty, so I already had a good working knowledge of the physical works, so that took the wind out of their sails.

Maybe the (sneaky) idea was, to make close-enough friends with the other gender to sit down after That Presentation, and compare notes. Not easy in IIRC, sixth grade, when all the teachers and the Gestapo from the Office were all so uptight about it all.

Our school offered no such education until we were 14 years old, way too late. Most females in my class were already on birth control by then.
