#527 – Connected

I rarely have any sort of meaningful interaction with humans in real life apart from my family. That entire part of my life is now filled with little pictures and short bursts of text from people that are scattered all over the world. The rolling messages of “good night” and “good morning” have really opened my eyes. It makes me think of “home” more as this planet rather than just this house that I live in.

All nice and cozy, until the MCP decides you’re needed on the Game Grid.

We’re (well, some of us) getting close to practical (if not organic) telepathy, with a geographically broad community. Borders are lines on a map, just as they always were.
As Alan Watts commented in the sixties, the next step will be having the phone implanted. Then if your friend doesn’t answer, it means – he’s dead!
Right after (or, we’d hope, before) will come the Privacy switch. There will be times you Just Don’t Want Telephonus Interruptus…

I think this one would be even better if the phone vibrated after they said “Goodnight Internet.”
