I get that people generally have good intentions when saying stuff like that, but it is really ignorant. It’s kind of like finding out a friend has diabetes, and your advice to them is, “Have you tried making your body produce insulin? Maybe that’ll make you feel better.”
I’m not sure, I always took “being depressed” as different from the medical condition of depression. Like being depressed is just a prolonged sadness that can come from any number of understandable reasons, like a loved one dying, and (should) eventually pass. While of course there is a grieving process and you can’t just rush through it, people naturally want to help cheer you up and it’s something that might help with you moving on. Whereas depression isn’t something you can push through. Maybe I’m just reading too much into things though.
Those platitudes are the worst advice to get when you’re depressed. It really kinda feels like you’re getting kicked while you’re down…
“I used to be so depressed about never having murdered someone with a chair, but not anymore”
Sounds about right!
