#168 – Drop

A few times a year I’ll hear a Great Horned Owl in the backyard. I like to go out there in the dark and try to find it. I never do. The hooting seems to come from everywhere. It will eventually stop calling or suddenly fly away from a tree that is nowhere near the one I am currently staring at.

Today’s Biff is steamy.

Maybe the Dark Lord has fallen to a boy with a lightning-shaped scar, and everyone’s sending owls out. Through trees.

We used to have a brushtail possum in our tree in the backyard. It was fun to watch at nights, because it would bolt up the tree, realise we’re not there to attack, climb down, then realise we still might pose threat, and bolt back up. This was all well and good until our cats discovered this possum, which proceeded to jump on me to avoid said cats.

Fun Fact: Owls, instead of pooping like everyone else, instead regurgitate their digested food as “pellets”. People who are so enclined may disect these pellets and see if the owls are still eating mice or whatever.

    1. Chris says:

They do both. The “pellets” are just bones and fur. Everything else comes out the other end. You can usually find an owl’s favorite tree by the “whitewash” of poop down the trunk.

I thought those were just called Birch trees.

I had a Bio teacher that brought in a (handicapped) Great Horned Owl on finals day. I think he cheated off of me.

    1. Arcan says:

The handicap was that the owl had to have 2/3 of one of its wings amputated, so it couldn’t fly.

        Aww. 🙁

To have that ability – and then have it taken from you.
        No worse fate.
