#107 – Deep

I remember being very young the first time I got to play in the sand on a beach. I had my little plastic shovel and started digging to fill up my pail with sand. I was completely surprised when I struck wet sand. I played in many sand boxes back home and this had never happened before! When I dug a little further the hole started to fill with water! Where was it coming from?! Was I digging through to the ocean on the other side of the planet?

Today’s Biff is under the weather.

Castles and treasure vaults made out of sand. Silly pirates! Silly children!

In college during spring break we (about four of us, it’s a bit hazy) decided we would build a sandcastle that would withstand the tide. So just below the high tide line we built this enormous castle with multiple walls. The tide started to come in, slowly nibbled away the first wall, then started on the second. At one minute till the peak of high tide, our castle still stood with one wall left. Then a wave MUCH bigger than all the rest took it out in one swipe. Didn’t find any treasure though.

Once at the beach I was digging in the sand and my grandmother stuck her arm in the hole I was digging, then she yanked her arm out, yelped, and said I had dug straight to Australia because it was so deep and a crocodile had bitten her. I was fascinated and scared at the same time. I immediately filled the hole back up and threw away the crocodiles foot necklace I was wearing. I now know it’s only possible to dig to Australia in Australia.

Until reading your comment, Kree, I hadn’t taken note of the pirate’s skull… Love It!
