#98 – Vanilla

Man I have never seen a scorpion out in the wild but if I did I would probably flip out! TV and movies have taught me that they are instantly deadly. I freak ou enough with spiders. A scorpion is some sort of spider crossed with a lobster crossed with a nightmare that you can’t wake up from.

..Australia only has poisonous spiders. And snakes.
I’ve never seen a scorpion in my life. Ever.

When I was a kid, I used to hunting for scorpions in the desert at night with a black light. It was good fun. I wouldn’t catch them or anything, I just liked the way they looked under the light. I’ve known people in the south who had scorpion infestations in their homes. That would scare the crap out of me.

  3. Tekaramity says:

I am terrified of scorpions so very much.

Even though I’ve never even BEEN to Arizona or other places that they inhabit!

I just dislike creatures that can sting in general.

I’ve seen a scorpion. My mother, sister, myself and a hitch-hiker (this was the early ’70s when hitch-hiking was a bit safer than it probably is today) had spent the night in the Arizona desert and we woke up to find a small one sheltering itself under the rear hatch of our 1966 VW station-wagon. My sister wanted to kill it, but my mom reminded her that *we* were the intruders in *it’s* territory. And thus did that scorpion live another day. I like to think that it’s many decendants still roam that desert…

as long as i don’t run into the scorpion from “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”, i think i’ll be alright

  6. ZeoViolet says:

The bigger they are, the less deadly they are. It’s the tiny ones that have the really nasty venom, in general.

    1. m4rek says:

Aaactually it’s more a case of comparing their pincers to their tail. Whichever one is bigger is the one you have to watch out for. Obviously if it’s the tail you should run like hell.

  7. Lisa says:

    Australia has scorpions.
Rule of thumb – the bigger it is, the less poisonous it is. It’s the little ones that are the most deadly.

(I have no proof or citations, this comment is purely based on ‘a friend of my cousin’s wife told me’ sort of info)

  8. Lisa says:

Wow I totally need to read the other comments before posting.
    *pokes ZeoViolet* what you said!

  9. McGehee says:

A few years ago I saw a live scorpion for the first time in my life — in my bathroom. Killed it with the spine of the paperback book I was reading. It was less than half an inch long.

    The scorpion, that is.

Can I have his ice cream?

    1. SurveySays says:

      i already ate it.

  11. Davidsmusicbox says:

Also something to know, the darker the scorpion, the less poisonous it is if I remember correctly (verification on if that’s right, or an old wife’s tale would be nice.)

  12. Horace S. Patoot says:

Ditto the bigger is better comment for the US Southwest. My wife saw a scorpion on the floor in the bedroom at our place in Utah and, without thinking, stomped on it with her bare foot. She reported that the sting was about like a wasp sting. We kept the carcass and ID’d it on the internet to be sure it wasn’t deadly.

  13. Fahrquad says:

Scorpions are often found in areas with rock outcrops and sandy soil. The ones we have here in the southeast are dark gray to charcoal colored and are an inch to an inch and a-half. The sting is painful but no more dangerous than a wasp sting. The only deadly scorpion in the US is the Arizona Bark Scorpion.

  14. Stasis says:

I used to have the occasional scorpion in my house, dark brown and about an inch long, but they’ve stopped showing up for several years now. I never identified them, but I’ve been stung a few times and it wasn’t that bad at all. I’m less afraid of them than I am of wasps. I didn’t feel right killing them, so I’d regularly catch scorpions in cups and just take them outside.

  15. We found a baby scorpion in the bathtub one time…no clue how it got there, especially since we haven’t seen any since then.

    1. SurveySays says:

this happened to me once except it was a snake. i had nightmares for a week and showering became a stress filled journey while i armed my self with a stick and beat the shower curtian to listen for hissing and flung the curtian open for a visual confermation that the snake didn’t have angry snake family living in my pipes…

  16. JuniorCrowley says:

The ‘Fallout’ games have scorpions in them. For better effect, play ‘Fallout 3’ and ‘Fallout: New Vegas’.

  17. LibraryLady says:

Don’t like crawly creatures of any kind. If I saw a scorpion fair bet on which of us would run away faster and further. I don’t usually call anyone to deal with “nasties” but I’d make an exception for one of them before I’d go back in the house. Coward and proud of it!

  18. Micah says:

My sister got stung on the toe by a scorpion once. Fortunately, it wasn’t poisonous.

  19. Psychlycan says:

I must be the odd one. I have no fear of scorpions, in fact, I find the big ones kinda cute. Spiders on the other hand, I freakin’ hate them and want to burn most any that I find.

  20. Barn0wl says:

Living in Arizona, I’ve seen lots of scorpions. I pretty much leave them be. If I were to find one in the house, I would attempt to capture it in a jar or something, then release it … far away.

  21. Penthoplayer says:

I was once camping out, but decided to sleep under the stars. Shortly after I crawled into my sleeping bag, I saw a scorpion on top of it, just a couple of feet from my head. I didn’t panic, I just let it do it’s thing and run off. It turns out it just wanted through, as though I was trying to sleep on it’s daily road.

  22. Gewurztraminer says:

Lived in Arizona for 15 years before I ever saw a scorpion. When I did, it was because one fell out of a plant hanging over the table at a restaurant that I was dining at with friends; not even out in the desert or anything.

It was small so I instantly assumed ‘poison! danger!’ and dumped my full glass of water all over the table just so I’d have an empty container to trap it in. My then girlfriend (now wife) was appreciative but everyone else just gave me a hard time for making a mess.

  23. Radical Edward says:

I know for a fact that if baby scorpions do not leave home as soon as they’re old enough, the mother eats them.

  24. ato784 says:

    mmmmmm… lobster

  25. extremist343 says:

I am the ant king! Seriously, ants never bite me. Pretty much everyone else I know has been bitten by an ant at some point in time, but I’ve gotten them to crawl on me and they have never bitten me. I live in Canada though so, I’ve never seen a scorpion that wasn’t in a cage of some type or just on T.V. Also I may be immune to poison.

    1. Mahnarch says:

“…and that’s when I found out I was immune to snake venom.” LOL.

I see all these people who think scorpions, etc (and alligators, for the Florida folks) are no big deal.
And then, I remember that we have bears and mountain lions up here and it’s no bigs to us.
