#629 – Sundae

A similar thing happened to my wife. They refused to give her a smaller amount of free ice cream. So she relented and got the two large sundaes and our son ate maybe 20% of it before giving up.

I had a similar thing happen in a Dunkin’ Donuts, where they wouldn’t substitute a small coffee for the medium coffee that was part of the discount deal. I managed to convince the server to charge me (the lower price) for a medium coffee, and serve it in a small cup. I would have just poured out some of the medium coffee onto their parking lot, but their medium cups are styrofoam, which imparts an unpleasant taste to the coffee.

THIS TOTALLY HAPPENED TO ME THE OTHER DAY! Only even more surreal.

I was at DQ with my daughter, and we had a “Buy one medium Blizzard, get a mini, small, or medium Blizzard free” coupon. Keep in mind, this is exactly the wording of the coupon. So, we get to the counter and I order a medium for me, and a small for her. The girl behind the counter says they have to be the same size. *I* point out to her the wording on the *actual* coupon. She just repeats the “must-be-same-size” argument. I play the “so-even-though-it-says-mini-small-or-medium-on-the-coupon” card, to which she simply repeats the “must-be-same-size” argument, followed by the “the-system-won’t-take-the-coupon-otherwise” twist. I just shook my head and got 2 mediums, but… wow.

Well, Chris, she could’ve just gotten the medium and eaten whatever your son left…

“Free large sundae? I’ll take it!”

“Actually the coupon is for half off on a small sundae. But the coupon itself is both free and large.”

After being on this from both sides most registers now you must have the manager’s code to override a coupon’s conditions in the computer. And yes it is a pain in the ass on our end too, after all we have to hunt down the manager thus make a line of people to solve an issue caused by you not reading. Its easier to hand out coupons for associates since we are given a handful for people just like you. Oh and FYI these systems are in place to cause less theft of products.
