When I was a kid I always made happy jack-o’lanterns and my older brother made monstrous ones. I always thought my creations were happy to be pumpkins. His were shocked and horrified by whatever they saw.

My grandfather made the only one I ever had. He and your brothers had the same frame of mind. I thought thing was frightful and wouldn’t come mear it.
I usually just free-hand whatever strikes me as an appropriate face for the pumpkin. And, if you use one of those battery-powered blinking lights, with the multiple Christmas-type lights or LEDs, you can cut a design in the back, and put it near the wall, so you get a small sort-of animated pic flickering behind the Jack O’ Lantern.
