#223 – Pile

I’m kind of amazed at how little “trash” we generate in my house. The main bulk of everything that gets carried out of the house is recycling now. Most of that is packaging. I seem to remember as a kid there being at least 4 times as much trash to take out every week. Maybe I was just smaller and everything seemed bigger.

Also your family probably casually threw away a lot more stuff.

It’s not just a generational thing though. I was only about 90% of the way to convincing my ex that toilet paper tubes and the (paper) outer wrapper were RECYCLABLE by the time things fell apart. >.>

What is this “recyclable”? We throw everything out because we don’t get curbside pickup and the recycling center is too far away.

So… we have the sentient trash problem on a far too regular basis.

I generate loads of waste but that’s mostly because our local council won’t organise plastic recycling bins anywhere nearby so I end up throwing away milk bottles and plastic packaging that would be pick up by curbside recycling in every other place I’ve ever lived. (Their justification is that plastic gives off dangerous fumes when burnt, because people go around randomly setting fire to bin apparently!)

It does seem to depend on personal upbringing though. My family are all pretty good at pre-sorting our recycling, but the building I live in needs 8 general waste containers but only 2 each for paper/cardboard and tins/glass, so I’m guessing there’s a lot of people who just throw everything into the general waste.
