#265 – Haunted

Apparently humans are not born with the fear of ghosts and monsters. My son never had trouble with the lights being off or the door being open to a dark closet. In fact he thought it was fun because that’s when he gets to play with flashlights. This all came to an end when he started seeing episodes of his cartoons where the characters learn that ghosts aren’t real and you don’t have to be afraid of the dark. This has the complete opposite effect if you have never been introduced to the concept of being afraid of the dark in the first place! What the heck cartoons?!

Today’s Biff hangs on.

Heh, your comment brings to mind the airline pilot sketch: C: I’m fed up with that game. Let’s play another game. I know what..

FO: What? (The Captain picks up a microphone.)

C: (over intercom) “Hello, this is your Captain speaking. There is absolutely no cause for concern.” That’ll get them thinking.

(The First Officer reaches for the microphone.)

C: No, no, no, no. Not yet, not yet. Let it sink in. They’ll be thinking, er, ‘What is there no cause for alarm about? Are the wings on fire?’ (over intercom) “The wings are not on fire.” Now they’re thinking, er, ‘why should he say that?’

Apparently, we’re born with the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises, and everything else we pick up in life. Cartoons always try to discourage being scared of things I was never scared of.

I remember when I was little I liked watching scooby-doo. Then I started to have bad dreams so mom made me stop watching it. What she didn’t realize was that in my nightmares I always dreamt about these creepy mcdonalds toys that they were giving away at the time… had nothing to do with scooby doo at all

What is this “fear” you guys keep talking about?

I miss the days when people put actual effort into making video games, particularly the storylines. nobody plays for the story anymore.
I mean, how long does it take to come up with the plot for a call of duty game? “here’s a gun, kill things with it”. it took longer to type that than it did to think of it.
Anyone ever heard of or played homeworld? possibly the best storyline I’ve ever seen in a game.

There’s actually good story in a lot of games if you know where to look, especially Bethesda productions. Problem is… the games themselves are usually riddled with bugs, to the point where some quests break and it kind of kills the story when you have to spoiler it to look up console commands to force the game to do a workaround for the bug.

There’s also a lot of indie games that put effort into the story and presentation (beyond “Let’s make it photorealistic 1080p 60fps”). Check out Bastion (And probably Transistor but I haven’t actually played that one yet), Nihilumbra, Thomas was Alone, Cave Story and Child of Light for some interesting examples.

Hate to be a stickler over details, but I’m pretty sure the non-rhyming ghost’s name wasn’t Clyde.

    1. Arcan says:

And now I would like to correct my false correction, the ghost is indeed named Clyde. My bad.
