#549 – Miss

This is a problem that started with me after I got a job. Any small items that I want I just buy for myself. Anything I want but can’t afford is too expensive for a normal gift. This is where the tangentially related gift market comes into play.

I, personally, would love a Star Wars butter dish

  2. kingklash says:

But, what if you only have access to Star Wars butter?

I get the same types of gifts with things in which I’ve shown a mild, but recent, interest. If I take everyone out for sushi once, weeks before my birthday, I get a make-your-own-sushi kit, books about sushi, sushi calendars, posters, action figures, bathroom sets, etc. The slightest bit of enthusiasm in something translates to “boog is super excited by and must have anything and everything even remotely related to it.”

Am I so generally apathetic about things that “interest” comes across as “obsession”? Meh.

You do realize you have a perfect opportunity to have some fun with that, don’t you?

      1. boog says:

I don’t. Unfortunately my situation correlates with Murphy’s Law, and any attempts to seize the opportunity to have fun are sure to backfire.

Note, for example, that I never said I receive gifts for things that genuinely interest me.

you gotta capitalize on this; take everyone out to a mercedez or bmw lot and see what they give you…on the other hand, this could potentially result in several key chains.

      1. boog says:

Key chains, and also “make-your-own key chain” kits, books about the history of the Mercedes logo, roadmaps, a new ice scraper (that just doesn’t work as well as the old one), a Mercedes lampshade (I don’t have any lamps), BMW butter dish, and so on.

I had this problem with my former roommate. Because I’m interested in a few, *specific*, Japanese things, and I’m also a big fan of the Seattle Mariners, he thought it was a great idea to cut out and give to me every single newspaper article he came across that mentioned *anything* about Japan or the Mariners.

I’ve found the same sort of problem. Mom always wants to get us stuff for Christmas and birthdays, even we’ve mostly all got way more disposable income that folks do right now.

What I’ve taken to doing is whenever Mom asks what I want for whatever, I try to think of something I’ve been interested in, but never taken the time to find a good entry point into, and asking for cheap, but decent, something like that.

Mom calls this “the quest for the golden fleece.”

  5. I got Star Wars mugs for Christmas. Best gift ever.

  6. Kyree says:

wow, this exact thing happened to me!
my friend got me a Star Wars butter dish! the worst part is she hand painted it too so I really can’t return it!

also I’v been reading Biff now for years and I really appreciate your humor and how clean it is. That’s a hard thing to come by now a days. keep up the good work!

    1. Chris says:

      Hey, thanks Kyree!

  7. Arcan says:

This is why I asked for cash instead of gifts, but I would get responces like “that will ruin the surprise!” News flash: I don’t care about being surprised.

  8. Mr. Meval says:

No matter how inane, stupid, incompetent, insensitive and down right criminal a present is accept it with good grace. Unless it’s a booby trapped otter.

In this instance do you think that polymer clad Sturmtruppen will now get that spiffy car? HA HA HA HA!
