#196 – The Grid

I saw the original Tron when it came out in the theater. It was definitely a favorite film of mine as a kid but I never really saw it again past being a teenager. Then a few years back the 20th anniversary DVD came out and I excitedly brought it home to show my girlfriend. She had never seen it before! I was amazed at how boring it was. A couple scenes were interesting to watch but it really didn’t stand up to the movie I had playing in my head all these years. The DVD sits there on a shelf played only once in the 9 years I’ve owned it.

Today’s Biff is suspicious.

You’ve seen the new TRON, I’m assuming? It’s definitely a worthy successor, and I highly recommend it if you haven’t.

Blasphemy! TRON shall never be boring!

I’ve watched the Tron movie a few times since I bought that same set at the same time, I still really enjoy it for the quality of what it was, not so much compared to today’s movies. The neatest thing, in my opinion, about Tron was that it took special effects and merged them with live action in a way that wasn’t really mirrored until Iron Man came out. It’s not so much special effects for the sake of special effects, and they don’t really so much detract from the film as give it that layer of “you’re really inside a computer”

That said, I will readily admit that I’ve watched Legacy more times since it came out than I’ve watched Tron since it came out 🙂

I watched them both for the first, and last, time a few months ago. Both were interesting and left unanswered questions, who did Flynn marry and what happened to her? How did the “computer-only” piece mangae on the outside? How did the game evolve? If getting answers means watcing either movie again, oh well I’ll never know. I did hear there’s another one in the works.
