#195 – Strip

I really liked the original Superman movie when I was a kid. I still remember the restaurant we went to that night on the way home from the theater. I liked the idea of Clark Kent wearing the Superman outfit under his work clothes but thinking back on it now I don’t understand where his boots were supposed to be. Did Clark wear comically large shoes? Should I not worry about it because it’s just a movie?

Today’s Biff is going far.

The official story is that there is a small bag under his cape that is JUST large enough to hold all his clothes.

I meant where are his Superman boots when he’s Clark Kent?

maybe they squish up under the shoes and expand when he takes them off? or are soft like socks?

That sounds like one of those questions you really don’t want to know the answer to.

Super-speed. He pulls them out of his plot-hole and puts ’em on faster than a speeding bullet.

He’s so fast he just runs home real quick – every time.

    2. Cari says:

Yeah, but every time he went into a phone booth, he’d rip off his clothes and fly away really fast. He didn’t have time to fish out the baggie, stuff his clothes in, then somehow refasten it to his back.

And, most of all, how come a simple pair of glasses are able to make everyone not recognize him??? I want one of those!

    1. MDKing says:

i can get the glasses idea because whenever i take my glasses off for a night because i dont want to wear them, my friends don’t recognize me

  3. M says:

The glasses hold a tiny sort of chameleon circuit that makes you see what seems to be there.

I like the soft like socks idea. Maybe his were really cool socks pulled over his Clark Kent shoes. The suit was really strong and could withstand heat, cold, whatever else the baddies threw at him, so why couldn’t his sock/shoes be just as wonderful?

  5. CK says:

Here’s the thing, though: Superman doesn’t need boots since he is bulletproof. His feet are super tough too, right? Sock-boots make the most sense.

  6. Lord Pent says:

I think the original idea was that the entire costume was skintight and made out of an alien material so that it really just hugs the body. Those boots? They’re really just glorified socks. And the cape just folds up really easily for storage against the small of the back.

To answer the question in third panel: And why not?

  8. DantesFire says:

If I remember correctly, pre-crisis Superman under superspeed, he would compress his Clark Kent clothes and put them in a pocket in his cape and take out his boots, which would expand when exposed to air. Then when putting on his Clark Kent clothes, he would put them over his super suit but compress his boots into the pocket and fold the cape behind his back. I remember once when he had to wear swim trunks, he compressed his whole suit to fit in his trunks’ pocket.
