#124 – Dug

I thought the whole conceit of dogs burying bones was just a thing in cartoons until we got our current dog. When she has a treat of some sort that she can’t finish she will go hide it for later. Hilariously she instinctively knows the motions she needs to make but doesn’t quite understand how to adapt them to living in a house. She will frequently place her chew stick down in plain site and then spend 10 minutes pushing invisible leaves over it with her nose. She is very thorough and makes sure to hit it from all angles.

Today’s Biff crushes scissors.

Of our four dogs, only one hides things. Unfortunately, she has worked out that beds and couches make good “burying” places.

dogs can be weird sometimes. we have a little area on our deck where we put our dogs carriers in. one of our dogs always jumps up onto this structure and sits on it looking out over the yard like it’s Pride Rock or something. then you look at him from the back door to see him look at you like, “What?”

We have a puppy which we acquired a few months ago (she was dumped on our street just before Christmas). When we still had some deep snow in the back yard she discovered that she could very easily burry things in it. 3 rawhide chews, a nyla bone and one smallish plush toy turned up with the Spring thaw. 😀

My parents had a dog who was a rescue — sweetest dog ever, wonderful personality, put up with everything that my brother and I could possibly have put her through (we were very small at the time, so she got poked and prodded and ridden on top of like a small horse, among other things). But she was always terrified that someone was going to take her food away from her or forget to feed her, because her original owners had apparently not been very diligent with feeding. She’d hide food all over the house. One of her favourite places was under my pillow — I’d find a biscuit or some kibbles stashed there at least a few times a week.

That is one of my most favorite quotes in the firefly series. 🙂
