#113 – Backup

When I worked at a fast food joint I was amused by the different requests on how to handle the ice in the soda that a customer just purchased. The most common request was “easy on the ice”. They would say in in a ver accusatorial way. I think there was a general opinion at the time that fast food places were trying to rip off customers by putting way too much ice in the cup. I think they would have been more frustrated to know that the most expensive part of the equation was the cup.

Today’s Biff is out there.

Ahh, the good old days, where crushed ice was ubiquitous, nobody offered unlimited refills, and a large soda was 16 ounces.

People don’t know the cup is the most expensive part? Why do they think you get a dinky cup for water? You can easily sneak some soda while getting your free water, but at least you didn’t make off with a cup.

    It is? 😮

Should have realized sugar + water is cheaper than the cup.

…so they put way too much ice in the cup just for the heck of it, then?

I actually naturally dislike the ice in my soda, it takes up room that could be filled with more root beer or Dr. Pepper, or coke.

Me too. All that ice waters down the drink as it melts.

There’s a regional fast food chain in my part of the U.S. that normally has the clerk at the counter put ice in the cup before giving it to the customer to put their choice of drink in at the dispenser. They always fill the cup to the rim with ice.

As a result, the drain tray at the dispenser is always covered with the excess ice people have dumped from their cups to make room for more than one sip of drink.

The one nearest my home has since departed from this procedure by getting a new drink dispenser that also provides ice.

It’s not that the cup is the most expensive part, it’s that the cup is the best way to keep track of sales.
In the store I work at, they once used a markdown code for people who just wanted the cup for water. 3 days later they said to just give people the cups; we lost more money on the markdown code than we did on giving the cups away. Marked down cup=marked down soda; free cup = missing cup, no soda used.

Of course the cup is expensive! It’s also a problem because of them ending up in landfills! That is why I always get my soda WITHOUT a cup! AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

(Yeah … I’m feeling a little batty today.)

Stupid corn subsidies making it cheaper to use HFCS than good tasting ingredients…

  10. SurveySays says:

i used to work at a hotel and the ice machine was the one thing that NEVER EVER EVER got cleaned. eeevveer. i started thinking about the mass of diffrent people that touch that machine everyday just to get some ice and now i never use ice. if i go to a place that doesn’t let the customers get their own drinks then i just order bottled water.

  11. Sam says:

I order without ice because usually the taste of fountain soda is watered down already. And even if it’s not the ice just ruins the taste. Plus I get more pop that way… has nothing to do with my thinking they’re cheap
