A memorable project I had in school was to build a structure out of only toothpicks and glue to protect a raw egg from a fall from a 5th floor window. My first entry was a fairly standard construction of pyramid shapes built out with the egg in the center. Unfortunately it didn’t have a large enough crumple zone to stop the egg from smashing open. We had a few weeks to design our projects so my second egg I painted on a layer of rubber cement every few hours. By drop day I had a softball sized rubber ball with an egg core. After the drop I had to cut it open to prove that there was an actual egg inside. Unfortunately it was a messy reveal as well.
Today’s Biff just keeps on truckin’.

I love the idea for the second egg.
I did that in middle school, but our teacher had the bright idea to do it off a balcony into the hallway below. We were the only class that got to participate that day.

We did the egg drop project when I was in the 5th grade. All the other kids spent weeks constructing these overly elaborate cages, elastic mechanisms, etc … I just put mine into a shoe box full of popcorn, taped the lid down, and chucked it off the barn roof. The egg lived, so I got an A on the project. And I got to eat the popcorn, too.
how is rubber cement related to toothpicks? or could you use anything you wanted? if that’s the case, then have you tried parachute? That’s what we did with chips.. though arguably that’s a lot easier ^^;;

my science teacher did this. he told us that we would get so much credit that we would defeitly pass the class. but he provided eggs that he had drown in vinegar for a week thus completly removing the hard shell and leaving us with this extremly fragile thing that most of the class broke when we picked it up.
I had plastic bendy straws and some tape. I modeled it after the mars rover payload by interlocking all of them into triforce shaped pieces, taped the edges together into a tetrahedron, and suspended the egg in the center with a tape cross. It only broke after the other kids angrily kicked it around after it failed to break after the third drop, and even then it was only the nonvital parts.
We had to build a bridge across two desks that could roll a golf ball across with a limited supply of straws, paper clips, and tape.
After the groups built the bridges, we had to see which bridge could roll the ball across the most amount of times before falling.
My group won!
And it was mostly my work since the others were mostly jock sort of kids.
I had to build one out of balsa wood.
It was so strong that the teacher climbed up on it and it still held.
No one else in the class thought to make a center support (our bridge only crossed a short stack of books and had to hold up a 2×2 board with barbell weights placed on it, increasingly).
